Are you home study read? That is, are you prepared for your Home Study? A Home Study is a visit from a licensed professional, often a social worker, to meet your family in your home. This visitor will make sure that you can provide a safe, stable home for a child, and file a report saying so. If you are hoping to adopt, you will need to have a Home Study before you can adopt a child, and usually before you can look for a match with an expectant mom considering adoption or a child in need of a home.

How home study ready do you need to be?

Some would-be afoptive parents choose to have a home study right away so they can find out where they are on the path to readiness. However, a home study comes with a fee, and it can be pretty pricey. You don’t need to be perfect, but it makes sense to be prepared.

Tke time before you arrange the home study to gather your documents:

  • Birth certificates, marriage certificates, or divorce decrees (if applicable)
  • Government-issued IDs
  • Proof of income (tax returns, pay stubs, or employer letters)
  • Health insurance documentation
  • Medical statements from physicians
  • Background checks and fingerprinting
  • Child abuse registry clearances
  • Personal references (often 3–5)

Without these documents, you can’t proceed. Having to search for papers at the time of the home study can be frustrating for everyone, and you may end up flustered and less at ease because you had trouble finding that elusive pay stub.

It also makes sense to walk through your home and identify any possible safety issues. You’ll need to resolve any such issues before you bring your new child home anyway, so it makes sense to take the needed steps now.

You don’t have to worry so much about staging your home, since you’re not trying to sell it to the social worker, or practicing nswers to questions. An honest discussion is what your home study professional wants.
