We have discussed adopting siblings and adopting a second child, but is there a limit to how many children one person or couple can adopt? How many kids can you adopt?

The short answer: there is no law setting a limit on how many kids anyone can adopt.

Reasons to adopt multiple kids

Sometimes a family of siblings needs a stable, loving home. The more children there are, the more difficult it can be for such a family to find an adoptive home. Parents who are ready to open their herts to kids like these are doing something wonderful for that group of siblings and for their whole family. There is no rule requiring a group of siblings to be separated.

Sometimes a couple has already had a successful adoption and, just as people who have had one biological child may want to grow their family with a brother or sister, adoptive parents may have the same wish. Different people have different ideas about how large the perfect family is, and there is no reason an adoptive family can’t grow happily to any size.

It may also be that a family with children already in the home may have a special reason for adopting more children: the children of a sibling who become orphans can be adopted by an aunt or uncle, for example, or a friend may ask a happy family to make room for a child she can’t parent herself.

Obstacles to adopting multiple children

A second home study may not be required for an additional adoption if your first home study is less than five years old. However, if an adoption will result in a large family, a new home study may check and make sure that the home still offers to amount of space required for the child, a safe environment, and so on. All the children in the home can be checked on to ensure that the parents have the capacity to care for the total number of children planned, and health certifications may be required. Background checks are required for kids 14 and older.

Assuming the home study goes well, there are no further obstacles to growing your family through adoption. Heimer Law will be honored to help you through your adoption journey. Call us at (479) 225.9725 or fill out our inquiry form below.
