Every year, millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. We plan to save money, get healthy, and spend more time with our families.

Nearly half of us don’t make resolutions. Those who skip the resolutions, however, may still develop goals for the new year. sometimes those goals are the same as our resolutions — centering on health and money — but they may also be professional goals, plans to renovate our homes, or spiritual goals.

Maybe this year your goal should be to take the plunge and grow your family through adoption. If you’ve been thinking about taking this step for a while, maybe for years, the new year might be the perfect timing.

Pondering

We’ve learned by experience that many families think about adopting for years before they actually make the call. There are many reasons for this. For some couples, adoption is not the first choice. They may spend years waiting, hoping, and having fertility treatments before deciding that adoption will be their route to parenthood. Other people may know that they want children, but at some point they realize that marriage and family is not their path; adoption is the way to grow their family.

If you are in this early stage, consider making a mood board that shows what you think adoption will add to your life. Use the process to think about why you want to adopt, what you expect this step to bring to your life, and what kind of adoption experience you are hoping for.

With more insight into what adoption will mean to your future, you will be better able to take the steps you need.

Planning

For some families, adoption is a desire but they’re not sure whether they can afford to adopt, or to meet the requirements for adoptive parents. Some people find that going ahead with a home study can help answer those questions. The home study process can give you a checklist of items to resolve and decide about before you actively begin the adoption journey. It can also give you the confidence that you are ready.
